Calculate child pension
The calculation of a child pension depends on whether the claim is lodged:
- on or after 5 April 2010
- before 5 April 2010.
See: Indexation of entitlements (weekly pensions)
Claim lodged on or after 5 April 2010
First 13 weeks
Children are not paid weekly pensions in the first 13 weeks from the date of the worker’s death because this is provided for in the partner pension.
From the end of 13 weeks
At the commencement of the 14th week, calculation of the weekly pension amount will vary depending on:
- the total number of dependent children and/or
- whether the total pension payable to dependents is to exceed the current maximum of $2,800 (twice the State average weekly earnings).
The total of pensions payable… | …does not exceed the current maximum | …exceeds the current maximum |
Not more than five dependent children | each child is paid 5% of the deceased worker’s PIAWE |
each child is paid a pension calculated in accordance with the formula: $2,800 x 50/(50+5N) (where N is the number of dependent children entitled). |
More than five dependent children | each child is paid an equal share of 25% of the deceased worker's PIAWE | each child is paid an equal share of $933. |
Overtime and shift allowances are not included in the calculation of PIAWE after the first 52 week period.
